IAUC 8895 (2007 Nov. 14)
NOVA PUPPIS 2007

 NOVA PUPPIS 2007

Alfredo Jose Serra Pereira, Carnaxide, Portugal, reports his
discovery of an apparent nova (mag 7.0) during his regular visual
patrol on Nov. 14.23 UT with 14x100 binoculars, the position given
as R.A. = 8h16m.2, Decl. = -34o15' (equinox 2000.0); he had nova-
hunted for 625.85 hr since his discovery of the 2001 nova V4740 Sgr
(cf. IAUC 7706).  Pereira adds that nothing was detected at this
position in his visual searches during Nov. 6.23, 7.22, 8.23, 10.23,
and 11.22 down to mag about 8; additional monitoring during Nov.
14.243-14.256 also yielded mag 7.0.  Following requests by the
Central Bureau, CCD astrometry for the variable has been reported
by J. E. McGaha (Tucson, AZ, U.S.A., 0.62-m f/5.1 reflector) and by
J. Young and H. Rhoades (Table Mountain 0.61-m f/16 Cassegrain
reflector).  From his 1-s exposure on Nov. 14.411, McGaha measures
R.A. = 8h16m18s.01, Decl. = -34o15'24".1, red mag 6.5 (USNO-A2.0
reference-star catalogue).  From four exposures "in surprisingly
good seeing for the low altitude" on Nov. 14.47-14.48, Young
measures average position end figures 17s.99, 25".0, mag 6.7 in a
red filter (USNO-B1.0 reference-star catalogue); Young also
estimated visual mag 6.4 at this time.  Young adds that comparison
with a red image from the Digitized Sky Survey shows only an
extremely faint star (mag about 20) at the same spot as the
apparent nova (located in a fairly empty area surround by "a busy
star field").

IAUC 8896 (2007 Nov. 15)

 V597 PUPPIS = NOVA PUPPIS 2007

     N. N. Samus, Institute of Astronomy, Russian Academy of
Sciences, informs us that this nova (cf. IAUC 8895) has been given
the designation V597 Pup.  A. J. S. Pereira, Carnaxide, Portugal,
writes that the nova was at visual mag 7.4 on Nov. 15.19 and 15.24
UT.
     H. Naito and N. Tokimasa, Nishi-Harima Astronomical
Observatory, report that they obtained a low-resolution spectrum
(range 410-670 nm; resolution 1200 at H_alpha) of V597 Pup on Nov.
14.77 UT with the 2.0-m NAYUTA telescope (+ MALLS).  The spectrum
shows broad Balmer lines and Fe II (42 multiplet) with P-Cyg
features, as well as blueshifted absorption lines of Fe II (49, 74),
O I 615.5-615.8 nm, and Si II 634.7-nm.  The nova belongs to the Fe
II type and was caught near maximum light.  A narrow Na I D
absorption line (EW = 0.3 nm) indicates that some interstellar
reddening exists.  The expansion velocities derived from the FWHM
of the Balmer features H_alpha, H_beta, and H_gamma are 1800, 1700,
and 1800 km/s, respectively.

1. X-ray Transient/Nova = V598 Pup

Further to AAVSO Special Notices #81 and 82, Nikolai Samus, Institute of
Astronomy, Russian Academy of Sciences, announced (IAU Circular No. 8898,
D. W. E. Green, ed.) that the bright x-ray transient and apparent nova
has been assigned the name V598 Puppis [07:05:42.7 -38:14:42 (equinox 2000.0)].

Also as urged in Special Notices #81 and 82, filtered observations (V
filter recommended) should be made for this star due to the emission seen
in the spectra. Unfiltered observations may be subject to contamination
from the emission.

Observations reported to the AAVSO to date include: 542 unfiltered
time-series observations by Arto Oksansen, San Pedro de Atacama, Chile,
covering the interval Nov. 19.2684 - 19.3737 UT and the magnitude
range = 11.5646 - 11.6074, with an average magnitude = 11.5869; Nov.
19.506, 10.17V, W. Dillon, Missouri City, TX; Nov. 20.036, 9.9, A. Amorim,
Florianopolis, Brazil (via IAU Circular No. 8898).

The name V598 PUP will become available for reporting observations to the
AAVSO shortly. Until then, please continue to submit observations using
the name VSX J070542.5-381439.

http://www.aavso.org/publications/specialnotice/83.shtml

XMMSL J070542.7-381442 = V598 PUP
http://ooruri.kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp/pipermail/vsnet-alert/2007-November/001343.html

AAVSO: http://www.aavso.org/publications/specialnotice/81.shtml
http://www.aavso.org/publications/specialnotice/82.shtml

2. Possible Nova in Ser

IAU Circular 8898 (D. W. E. Green, ed.) announces that S. Nakano, Sumoto,
Japan, reports that Koichi Nishiyama, Kurume, Fukuoka-ken, Japan, and
Fujio Kabashima, Miyaki-cho, Saga-ken, Japan, "have found a variable star
located at R.A. = 18h09m24s.25, Decl. = -7o22'14".2 (equinox 2000.0), with
the following unfiltered CCD magnitudes (200-mm camera lens, except 40-cm
reflector on Nov. 20):  Oct. 2.485 UT, 12.8; 12.501, 12.3; Nov. 19.358,
10.5; 19.387, 10.7; 20.414, 11.2; 20.430, 11.1; 20.431, 11.0.  A USNO-B1.0
catalogue star (mag 18.5) has position end figures 24s.30, 13".5."

ASAS 180924-0722.2 [18:09:24.0 -07:22:13.4 (J2000)], with a range of
13.6 - <15 V, shows a Mira-like light curve with a crude period of ~255
days, based on 3 cycles, including a gap of 509 days. Using the 255-day
period and the ASAS3 data, the star should be around maximum on December 5.
Thus, this ASAS star could be the star reported by Nishimaya and Kabashima.
